Increasing Local Midwifery Options
Anyone can help help get more midiwfery coverage/options in Madison.
There are 3 main areas of focus for improving childbirth options in Madison right now:

1) winning midwifery and out-of-hospital coverage through GHC
2) getting midwives at St. Marys Hospital
3) restoring vbac privileges to the midwives at UW Health/Meriter

VBAC Privileges Fo the Midwives at UW Health/Meriter

The UW midwives have been trying for years to win back vbac privileges, so that they can help women who have had c-sections succeed in having vaginal births with their next babies. The midwives lost vbac privileges at a time when there was no 24-hour attending OB for emergency cesareans. Now there is 24/7 OB presence at Meriter, and therefore it is time to let midwives attend vbacs again, because they have very high vbac success rates!

Consumer letters are THE most important catalyst for making those changes happen. Letters comprise a written record of consumer demand that can be shared at committee and board meetings.

The preceding information about what consumers can do to support this cause was provided by Ingird Anderson of Community Nurse Midwives.
